Fish Curing North Harbour, circa 1900. The American market for cured fish was at its greatest from 1877. On Cape Clear there were fish curing stations. Agents representing  British and American companies were on the island. When the fish were landed the buyers were on the quay with their team of handlers to gut, prepare and then pickle the catch. "There wasn't a woman, girl or child in the island who couldn't earn something in those days.." (Seanchas Chleire.) Steamers from Baltimore transported the fish to Britain. The American Steamers anchord off the harbour and carried the fish directly to New York. Cape Clear fish was sold on the New York fish market as CCC - Cotter Cape Clear. Kieran Cotter of Cotters bar was still buying, curing and exporting fish from Cape Clear until 1926.

One of the chief obstacles to a successful fishing industry in Cape Clear has been the want of a safe all weather all tide harbour. In 1810 recommendations for improvements had been made and by 1832 "a pier and basin had been construced " for the safety of fishing boats. An Doic - The Dock was built in 1842 and Cé Sheain Rua was built on the east side of North Harbour.1903 -06 the Office of Public Works and the Congested Districts Board  undertook improvements to the pier and the Dock.
